The Bahrain News Agency is an extension of the Gulf News Agency with all its components, including cadres and media experience, which was issued by a decision by His Highnesses and Excellencies, the Ministers of Information in the Arab Gulf States to establish it at a meeting held in Riyadh in 1976, where the late Mr. Tariq Abdul Rahman Al-Muayyad, Minister of Information at the time, chaired a board of directors The agency, as was approved in the same meeting, approved the budget of the News Agency and the administrative structure, and appointed Mr. Nabil bin Yaqoub Al-Hamar - currently His Majesty’s Adviser for Media Affairs - as Director-General of the Gulf News Agency who held this position until 1989.
The official broadcasting of the Gulf News Agency began on the first of April of 1978 under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister, and in the presence of a number of members of the Board of Directors and employees of the agency.
In 1985, the Gulf News Agency was joined to the Ministry of Information in the Kingdom of Bahrain, to issue later in 2003 a royal decree amending the name of the agency to the Bahrain News Agency.
In 1992, he was supervised by Bahrain News Agency, Khaled Abdullah Al-Zayani, head of news on radio and television, while Mr. Jamal Dawood Salman took over as editor-in-chief.
In 2005 Mr. Abdullah Salman took over as Director of the Agency.
In 2011, Mr. Muhannad Sulaiman Al-Nuaimi was appointed to act as the agency's director-general.
In May 2018, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Abdul Karim Al Mannai was appointed Director-General of Bahrain News Agency with the rank of Assistant Undersecretary.
In March 2019, Mr. Abdullah Khalil Buhaji was appointed Director-General of Bahrain News Agency with the rank of Assistant Undersecretary.
The Bahrain News Agency works with an integrated mechanism of work through distributing local and international news in Arabic and English languages, in addition to cooperating with a number of agencies to broadcast their news in other languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Hindi, Russian, French, German, etc., and broadcast economic, political, cultural and social reports to subscribers and future recipients.

Bahrain News Agency also elected a vice president of the Federation of Arab News Agencies, a member of the Executive Council of the Islamic News Agency (INA), and a member of the Executive Council of the Federation of Asian News Agencies.
The Bahrain News Agency signed several memoranda of cooperation and news exchange with more than 24 Arab and international agencies, and it has also become an active partner in many international conferences and events for news agencies.
